How much it cost to study in Canada as an International Student

We will be going to discuss how much it cost to study in Canada as a student. In this post, I have broken down all the steps or processes where you will have to pay fees or spend money. We will start calculating expenses from preparing for the IELTS exam to arrival in Canada. If you want to move to Canada, then you should expect all the expenses down below. So, let discuss all the things you have to go through and spend money or fees on.

Preparation and IELTS exam fees

If you want to come to Canada, then you need to take the IELTS exam either you are a 12th pass student or after graduation. IELTS exam is a must for all students. Many students go to coaching for IELTS preparation and I did also. You may also go to any IELTS coaching and if you are thinking that I am a genius in English and I do not need coaching for preparation then you are good to go. But my suggestion is to take coaching for at least some days even also if you are very excellent in English. Students who are weak can take coaching for 2-3 months and I also did coaching for 2-3 months.

Usually, coaching institute’s fees is approximately 5000-20000 Indian Rupees.

After preparing for IELTS, you are going to take the IELTS examination. The fees of the IELTS examination is about 14000 Indian rupees in India. It is very good if you score at least 6.5 bands overall and 6.0 in each module. If you score this much of band your application will go in SDS category.

Application fees of college

After getting an appropriate band score, you need to apply to college in Canada. There are several colleges that do not have application fees but on another side, there are also some colleges, such as Seneca, Humber, Sheridan, and many more, which charge application fees. Application fees of colleges are around 100$(Canadian dollars). Let say if you are applying to 2-3 colleges which most students do then your total application fees will be 12000-16000 Indian rupees.

After offer letter

After applying to college, you will get an offer letter from the college. It usually takes 1 month time to receive an offer letter. Offer t means you are accepted by the college and your admission is open. Let say you receive your offer letter then you need to pay college fees of 1 year (2 semesters). If you want to take admission in the diploma course, then fees would be between 16000$-19000$ depending on the college and program you chose. If you want to go for a master’s or MBA in reputed colleges then fees can go up to 90000$. But there are several colleges which provide masters and MBA courses in between 17000$-20000$. My brother is also doing a master’s in mechanical engineering at Windsor University and his university fees are 20000$ per year.

So, depending on your course and college you need to pay your first year (2 semesters) fees. Usually, fees of college are between 16000$-20000$(Canadian dollars).

GIC amount

The full form of GIC is a Guaranteed Investment Certificate. After paying fees in college, you need to pay 10,000 dollars in Canadian college as GIC, and paying GIC is mandatory. GIC is like for security that student will be able to survive even if he or she does not get a part-time job.

You will get your GIC amount back in the future. When you reach Canada, after opening your account in the bank you will get 2000$ in your bank account and after that, you will receive around 700$ each month for a year. So, in short, you will receive your GIC amount back when you will be in Canada.

So, you must pay 10000$ as GIC in Canadian bank.

Medical Test

After paying your college fees and GIC amount, you need to book a medical check-up exam. Fees to book the medical test is between 5000-8000 Indian rupees. You need to get done your body check-up only in approved hospitals by IRCC. There are few approved hospitals by IRCC in every state. In Gujarat state, there are only two approved hospitals. So, get your medical check-up done in your nearby approved hospitals.

So, you need to pay fees between 5000-8000 Indian Rupees for medical test.

Apply for visa (lodge visa file)

After all the above-mentioned steps get done then you have to apply for the visa. For submitting a visa file, you need to pay fees of around 10000 Indian rupees.

Till this point your main expenses are done from IELTS exam to getting visa approval.

Shopping

Visa application takes around 1 month to get approved but in this horrible pandemic, it is taking the time up to 6-7 months. Once your visa application status gets approved, now it is the turn of shopping. You can buy required items such as trolley bags, outfits, utensils, essential electronic items, hygienic items, some food, and medicine.

If you are coming Canada, then click here to see the list of items that you should bring with you.

Shopping can be done in 50,000-60,000 Indian rupees.

Flight Booking

If you are done with all then it is finally time to book a flight to move to Canada. The price of an air ticket is depending on various factors such as your airline, the day’s gap between the date of booking to date of the flight. A higher days gap means a lower the price of the flight and if you book an emergency flight then the price would be high. In this time of the pandemic, the price of airlines is too high.

The fare rates of your flight can be around 50,000-1,00,000 Indian rupees.

Canadian dollar cash

The last expense in the journey from the preparation of IELTS to arrival in Canada is taking Canadian dollars along with you. You should take Canadian dollar cash from your country to Canada. So that you can purchase essential items and services after going to Canada. My suggestion is to take at least 1000$ with you. Of course, you will get 2000$ in a bank account but it is after you open or activate your bank account. So, till the point of opening your bank account, you need some dollars to spend.

So, you should take at least 1000$ along. If you are traveling in a pandemic, then you should bring 1500$ – 2500$ dollars at least.
