First-month expenses in Canada as an international student

If you are reading this post then sure that you just went to Canada or planning to move to Canada. We will discuss the first-month expenses that students need to spend in Canada. If you are reading this in time in which quarantine is required, then calculate that quarantine expenses on your own because this post will only cover the first-month expenses in Canada that students need to do on essential items after the period of quarantine. So, if you are going in quarantine then calculate it aside from this expense.

We will be going to cover all first-month expenses in Canada on essential and optional items with their approximate price. Many students think that they would get 2000$ from their GIC account and they will save them. Of course, you can save them but initially, there are some expenses that you may need to spend on maybe from your GIC 2000$. So, let’s discuss it deeply.

Rent

Your first expense in Canada would be to pay rent. If you are going to Canada, then for sure you will rent the house to live in together in a partnership with some friends. Mostly 4-8 students live in the same house in Canada to reduce the rent per person. If there are more students in a house, then you will end up paying less rent because the total rent of the house will be divided into many individual parts. So, it is better to live some number of students together.

How much you students usually pay as rent per month?

First, when you will rent the house you need to pay the rent for the first two months to the respective owner. Mostly every student pays the first two-month rent when he or she takes a house on rent because it gives the kind of security to the house owner that you would not leave the house without paying rent.

The rent of a house really depends upon the area in which you want to live and the facilities of the house. If you are living in a city area means downtown, then you have to pay more rent compared to other areas which are not much developed.

Usually, students pay around 300$ dollars per month and it can go up to 450-500 dollars depending on the area and facilities. Even many students are paying 250$ also so it fluctuates depending on some factors. The above figures are applicable if multiple students are living in the house.

So, you have to pay around 600-1000$ for first two month at a same time.

Furniture

You also need furniture if your room is not furnished. Furnished means a normal bed, chair, and table. Of course, if you are not in habit of using a chair and table for study purposes or other you can skip that, but the bed is necessary. If you are going to live in a room that has a rent of around 300-400$ then you have to purchase those furniture items because usually, these are not available in the rent range 300-400$. You can rent a house which has all these furniture items, but you will have to pay 400-500$ per month for such a house’s room.

My suggestion is to rent a room that costs you 300-400$ dollars because, of course, it will not have furnished items, but you will be going to pay approx. 100 dollars less per month. Better is to purchase a bed of approx. 200$.

So, if you are going to buy bed but not chair and table then it will approx. cost you around 200$.

Winter Cloths

Buying winter clothes is required for students who are going to travel in January or September intake to Canada. You can wait for four months for winter to come and then purchase if you are going in May intake.

You need to buy a snow jacket and snow boots. My advice is to purchase a snow jacket and snow boots after coming to Canada. If a good deal or sale is going on, then it will cost you a total of 250-300$ including both jacket and boots and if you will not find any good deals then it may cost about 250-400 dollars.

So, including both snow jacket and boots you may spend 250-400$ depending on deals.

Presto Card

You need to commute in Canada from your home to college or a part-time workplace. If you are going to use TTC transportation, then you need to have a Presto card to pay the ride bill. Of course, you can pay cash also, but I think a card is better. First, you will have to load some dollars to the card so that you can pay using a card. You can load 100$ on the card.

So, you will have to load 100$ or more if you like to your presto card.

SIM Card

Once you reach there your SIM card will not work in Canada. So, you need to purchase a new SIM card. There are many SIM provider companies like Freedom, etc. In Canada, there is a high price for the internet. You will find wi-fi everywhere but still, you need to purchase a plan for the internet. You will have to check the pricing and the network connectivity of the companies. The company which provides you the best deal and has good network connectivity in most areas then you can go with that company. Basically, the plan’s rate normally is between 50$ to 80$ per month. You will get free calls and some GB of internet data.

Therefore, on SIM Card you will need to spend around 50-80$ depending on plans and company.

Electronics

Laptop

Buying a laptop after coming to Canada is optional. If you already have a good laptop then you should not buy another. Many students buy a brand-new laptop after coming to Canada.

If you are coming to Canada on Christmas time or on black Friday, then you will get lots of offers and good deals. A good laptop’s price range is between 500$ to 2000$ or higher depending on the model. But you will get a laptop with good features for 500$-2000$. If you are not a networking or programming student and not going to do heavy and multiple tasks on your laptop, then you can use the laptop smoothly within the price range of 500-1200$. If you are a programming or networking student or going to do heavy and multiple tasks like gaming, editing, or content creation then you can go for high features laptop within the price range of 1000$-2000$.

Buying a laptop is optional. I f you already have a laptop then you should not buy it otherwise you can. The price range of good features laptops, which can handle your task, is between 500$-2000$.

Smartphone

Same with smartphones also it is optional to buy a smartphone. If you have a good mobile phone, then you should not buy a new one and waste your money. Many students just purchase a new expensive smartphone to show off after coming to Canada, but you should not do it. If you are really in need of a new smartphone or getting a very good deal, then you can purchase it. The price range for smartphone is vary depending on your phone company and model.

If you will purchase an expensive smartphone like iPhone or Samsung on a good deal and you want to pay in installments of 24 months, then you will get a bill of 100-200$ per month depending on the company and model of smartphone.

As you can see that your first-month expenses will fluctuate on all the items listed above. So, now you can calculate what will be your first-month expenses in Canada depending on the things and facilities you will choose.
