In this post, we will be going to discuss 5 must-do things after arriving in Canada. If you are reading this post means that you are going to travel to Canada or are already in Canada but in your quarantine period. This post will guide you about what you should do once you arrive in Canada or after completing your quarantine period.

We will be discussing study permit, SIN number, Bank account, Mobile SIM, and college ID (college visit). We will also explain that how to complete these things once you reach Canada. Make sure that you should do all these important things after the completion of your quarantine period. You should not move out of your quarantine room or house. Let discuss this in deep.

Let’s discuss 5 must-do things after arriving to Canada as an international student:

  • Get Study Permit
  • Get SIN number
  • Activate bank account
  • Get mobile SIM card
  • Visit college

Let me first start with study permit.

Study Permit

The first must-do thing after arriving in Canada is to get a study permit. On the very first time when you arrive in Canada at Airport, you need to get your study permit. Getting a study permit is mandatory and it is approved of residence in Canada. It shows or proves that you are living in Canada as a student.

As soon as arrive in Canada at the airport you have to go to the immigration department to get your study permit. You will find a queue of students waiting for a study permit to issue. Do not worry it is a short process not a lengthy process but sometimes due to high rush, you may have to wait in a queue. When your turn comes you will be asked to show your documents there and they may ask you some basic questions and you have to just answer them. Again, you do not need to worry because those are very basic questions.

SIN Number

Second must-do thing after arriving in Canada as an international student is getting SIN number.

The full form of SIN number is Social Insurance Number. In Canada, every citizen, permanent citizen, and student have a SIN number. Basically, the SIN number has all the detailed information, such as tax information, your study permit, etc that the Canadian government can access. SIN number is 8-9 digit longer number.

Where will you get this number?

You will get your SIN number at the airport if there is a low rush at the airport. If at the airport there will be a high rush, then later you have to go nearby Service Canada Department. Once you will go there you have to give your documents such as passport and study permit and then they will provide your SIN number.

So, having a SIN number is required and you should get this either from the airport or Service Canada Department. Many students, initially, do not give importance to SIN number but they always get in difficultly. So, you should get your SIN number issued.

Activate Bank Account

Third must-do thing after arriving in Canada as an international student is to activate a bank account. Every international student has paid GIC to the bank in Canada. To avail of that GIC amount, you need to open or activate your account in a respective bank in which you have your GIC account.

To open your bank account in your respective bank you need to go to a nearby bank branch then ask that I have to open an account to avail my GIC. When you tell them, they will request you to give your document like passport, study permit, and documents related to your GIC account. After giving them documents they will open your account and get your first 2000$ in your bank account. It is easy and simple to open your account after your arrival in Canada.

I have broken down all the steps that require you to open or activate your account in the bank to receive your GIC amount.

Mobile SIM

Forth must-do thing after arriving in Canada is purchasing a SIM card. When you arrive in Canada you will have SIM card of your own country but those SIM card does not work here. After coming to Canada, you may have to call the bank, for part-time jobs, for any inquiry, or to friends.  So, you will have to purchase a new SIM card and all students do it.

Many students get confused that which company should I go to. There are several companies that provide SIM cards. Before purchasing the SIM card of any company, you need to make sure about the plan and network connectivity in your area. There are lots of companies which are giving you the best plans which affordable but the problem with some companies is a bad network connection. I do not mean that all the companies which provide the plan in the cheap range are bad in network connectivity, but my meaning is you have to check network connectivity first.

You will get the best plan deals from 50$-80$ per month. So, a mobile SIM is another thing that you should purchase.

Visit College

Fifth must-do thing after arriving in Canada as an international student. You must visit your college once when you arrive in Canada. Many students do not visit the college for many days after arriving in Canada.

The reason why you should visit your college is to get your college ID.  When you enter your college campus, first you need to go to the international department. After going to the International department say them that I have arrived in Canada. They will tell you to submit a copy of some documents and when you submit those, they will provide you your college ID. There are several benefits of college ID.

After getting a college ID, please visit the whole college so that you know that different departments are located here. So, in the future if you have to go to any department or lab then you do not need to ask anyone. Of course, you can ask if you do not know. Never hesitate to ask for help from anybody in college or anywhere.

So, I have fully explained you how to get your college ID from International Department.

I have done a detailed discussion about study permit, SIN number, open or activate bank account, Mobile SIM, college ID (visit college), and how to get all these things. I want to clear again that please do this after completion of your quarantine period because here in Canada there are strict rules regarding quarantine. If you violate those rules by going here and there, then you may have to end up paying a high penalty. So, make sure that you do all these processes mentioned above after the completion of your quarantine period.
